From the moment I first watched the Digimon: Digital Monsters anime, back when it was making waves as the Fox Kids answer to Pokémon , I’ve been interested in the Digital World. And it’s been interesting to see it portrayed in Digimon media since, from the idiosyncratic fantasy of Digimon World on the PlayStation, to the weird landscapes and islands of the anime, to the themed zones and dungeons that many of the games have stuck with. So I was delighted to see that the Digital World of Digimon Story Time Stranger , now available for the Nintendo Switch 2, is such a quirky, exciting take on things. It feels like the Digital World that decades of fascination have built to. Now, when I say “interested in the Digital World,” I mean on both a literal and conceptual level. In both the anime and video games, the Digital World exists in a parallel fashion to our world and is built on the digital communication networks that were established on Earth. This makes the Digital World both a reflection of our world, a funhouse mirror, and a kind of electronic trash bin. Little pieces come through all manner of link and wormhole and settle in the Digital World. It provides a good chance for creators in the franchise to comment on our relationship with technology and the meaning we’ve built while expanding the, well, digital world of our own.
